Who is IATF?
IATF is the International Automotive Task Force (IATF). This task force consists of a group of automotive manufacturers which aims at providing improved quality products to automotive customers worldwide. IATF 16949:2016 is an innovative document designed by IATF. It provides strong preference to the customer, with inclusion of a number of consolidated previous customer specific requirements. IATF has a database allowing you to check the validity of a certification.
This latest version was developed with an unprecedented level of industry feedback and engagement by AIAG members representing North America. In the US the IAOB is an International Automotive Task Force (IATF) oversight office. The IAOB is a Michigan Corporation with members including: FCA US LLC, Ford Motor Company, General Motors and the Automotive Industry Action Group (AIAG).
The purposes of IATF are:
- Develop an agreement regarding international quality system requirements aimed at participating companies’ direct suppliers or production materials, product and/or service parts, or finishing services.
- Create policies and procedures for IATF third parties to develop consistency worldwide.
- Provide necessary training to support 16949 requirements.
- Establish formal liaisons with appropriate bodies to support IATF objectives.
The first edition of 16949 was ISO/TS 16949: 1999. It was originally created by the IATF, aiming to harmonize the different assessments and certifications worldwide in the supply chain of the automotive industry. There were revisions in 2002 and then again in 2009, as necessary either for the automotive industry or in accordance with ISO 9001 revisions.
