Improving the IATF 16949 Quality Management System

To make it easier for organizations to understand the unique requirements of IATF 16949 from ISO 9001, all supplementary requirements for the Automotive Industry (IATF 16949) will be in italics.
Key Requirements:

Section 10 Improvement

Section 10.1 General

Your organization is required to select opportunities for improving you customer satisfaction such as advancements to products or services or enhancing the effectiveness of the QMS.

Section 10.2 Nonconformity and corrective action

Your organization is required to appropriately control, correct or deal with any nonconformities and the consequences. When you identify a nonconformity, you must determine what the cause is of the nonconformity and take actions to fix it. Once you have implemented these corrective actions, review them to ensure they are effective. Corrective actions usually mean you will need to update your QMS processes and/or risks and opportunities determined during planning. Records describing nonconformities, actions taken, and the results of those actions must be kept.

IATF 16949 has supplementary requirements for 10.2. When dealing with the corrective process, the organization must have a documented process for problem solving. The process to problem solve needs to use error proofing methods, meaning that the process is required to use the testing of testing devices for failures or simulated failures.

Additionally, if the organization is required to provide warranty on products, the organization must implement a warranty management process. The organization also needs to perform analysis on customer complaints and field failures, which includes returned parts, and must take corrective actions

Section 10.3 Continual improvement

When you are working to Continually improve your QMS, there are many strategies to use which include, internal audits, management reviews, or company performance metrics to help identify opportunities for improvement.

To comply with IATF 16949 the organization is required to document the process, and this must include the methods used, objectives, and measurement; a manufacturing process improvement action plan, and a risk analysis.
